Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Apprenticeship

CADCs provide addiction counseling services including assessment, individual and group counseling, case management, referral, crisis interventions, documentation, and treatment planning.

Individuals pursuing addiction counseling certification now have a new pathway to pursue these goals.

The CADC apprenticeship helps individuals obtain paid on-the-job training in a behavioral health setting that counts toward the supervised hours for credentialing with MHACBO, the state certification board. Apprentices who earn their CADC certification will have the opportunity to advance in their careers, increase their earning potential, and increase their skills, knowledge, and competence working with individuals with substance use disorders.

The Details: Classroom Learning

Over 12 months, apprentices take a pre-established set of courses:

  • Basic Counseling Skills

  • Group Counseling Skills

  • Alcohol and Drug Pharmacology

  • HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction

  • Counseling Ethics

  • Clinical Evaluation (ASAM)

These 6 courses satisfy the MHACBo requirements of 150 education hours for the CADC-I credential. Depending on prior work experience and related education, some apprentices will advance without needing to complete all the coursework.

United We Heal provides two of the required courses synchronously. These courses are 10 weeks long with 1 hour per week of live instruction via Zoom:

  • Basic Counseling Skills

  • Group Counseling Skills

The remaining four courses are provided asynchronously by the Center for Addiction Studies and Research (centerforaddictionstudies.com). These courses can be completed at your own pace and on your own schedule:

  • Alcohol and Drug Pharmacology

  • HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction

  • Counseling Ethics

  • Clinical Evaluation (ASAM)

The Details: On-the-job Learning

Over the 12-month period, you will complete 2,000 hours of on the job training. You will complete the apprenticeship with the 1,000 hours required for CADC-I certification.

While engaged in the CADC apprenticeship, you will receive clinical supervision by a MHACBO-certified CADC-II clinician. United We Heal received a grant from OHA allowing the Trust to provide clinical supervision to active CADC apprentices in our partnering training agent programs. Certain positions/shifts may not be suitable for this activity, in which case, you may need to make some changes to your current role.

The Details: Costs

Participants in the apprenticeship program will not have any cost for the training.

Along with receiving completely free education and paid training, individuals in the program also receive additional financial stipends and supports based on individual need.
